Responsible Metaverse – Entrepreneurial Pathways to Sustainable Digital Futures

Aims and Scope

The edited volume The Responsible Metaverse – Entrepreneurial Pathways to Sustainable Digital Futures seeks to explore how metaverse technologies can be developed, deployed, and governed in ways that promote responsible entrepreneurship, sustainable innovation, and societal well-being. As immersive digital environments evolve into mainstream platforms for commerce, education, healthcare, and social interaction, they present both unprecedented opportunities and complex challenges.

This book aims to provide a scholarly and practical foundation for understanding how entrepreneurs, policymakers, technologists, and educators can harness the metaverse to create inclusive, ethical, and future-ready digital ecosystems. It will address the intersection of metaverse innovation, responsible leadership, sustainability goals, and entrepreneurial strategies, with a strong focus on aligning technological progress with social responsibility and environmental stewardship.

Contributions are invited that explore (but are not limited to):

  • Entrepreneurship and Innovation in the Metaverse: Business models, start-up ecosystems, and value creation in immersive virtual environments.

  • Sustainable and Ethical Metaverse Development: Frameworks for environmental responsibility, social inclusion, and ethical governance in virtual spaces.

  • Responsible Leadership and Governance: Policies, regulations, and leadership strategies to ensure accountability, transparency, and equity in metaverse operations.

  • Education, Skills, and Workforce Transformation: Leveraging the metaverse for capacity building, talent development, and equitable access to knowledge.

  • Metaverse for Social Impact: Using immersive technologies to advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), promote cultural preservation, and bridge the digital divide.

  • Security, Privacy, and Trust: Safeguarding data, protecting user rights, and fostering trust in decentralised and immersive digital platforms.

  • Cross-Disciplinary Perspectives: Insights from business, technology, design, law, ethics, and sustainability to shape resilient metaverse ecosystems.

By bringing together research, case studies, and forward-looking perspectives, this book will serve as a comprehensive reference for academics, industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators committed to building a metaverse that is not only technologically advanced but also socially responsible and environmentally conscious.
